USA Weekend in Education Client: Gannett Company Date: 2012 Services: Graphic Design PROJECT DESCRIPTION USA WEEKEND Magazine, the discontinued supplement that was in over 800 newspapers (circulation ~50 million) had a program in place to promote their content in the education system as a tool for learning and growth. This particular program was aimed toward students, educators, and sponsors (both advertisers and non-profits) and included specific materials related to whatever the current events and latest public/social issues were. The parameters of the design were that it be progressive-looking and have a futuristic feel. I used the Earth graphic in the USA Weekend logo as a motif that could be both the Earth itself as seen from another planet (or the moon) or even as the Sun in a field of blue sky and open space. Either way, the minimalistic design was purposely kept free and open so that the illustrations of the 4 main educational categories – Science, The Arts, The Humanities, and Technology – could stand as a sort of rocket ship ready for takeoff, solidly placed on a ground that alluded to both a table (school) and to the surface of a planet. The table/planet was printed in silver ink, the main sky blue color was a spot ink, and the remaining colors were process CMYK. The silver ink was also used on the the inside flaps and as a highlight color in the typography.
